The Survey Project

Through this survey, I learned quite a lot that I couldn't learn in class. I will talk about these mainly in three aspects: questionnaire, survey and presentation.

When we began to do a questionnaire, try to brainstorm as many topics as we could. Then we talked about them and finally chose one we think is the most appropriate. In fact, it was a very difficult job; we spent quite a lot of time to do it.

Second, I want talk about the survey. I think the most important thing is find a proper place to conduct the survey. If you find the appropriate place, doing a survey is a very easy thing. If not, you will suffer a lot. I still remember when my partner and I went to Jurong Point first to interview people, because we thought there were a lot of people there. What we overlooked was that people there were very busy and had no time to spare. So we were refused several times. After analyzing the reasons, we went back to SRC in NTU, where we interviewed many people very successfully. Through the interview, I learned a lot of skills of communicating with foreigners too.

Thirdly, I will talk about the presentation. Honestly, it is really challenging. After it is the first time I did so formal presentation, so I couldn't help being nervous. I wanted to perform well, but I did not know how to do. What I did was preparing the materials I would present later. So when I began my presentation, I could remember the material so well that I did not worry too much. I also found that the most useful tip was to be natural, as much as you can.

My advices on projects are:

o Get in advance as much relevant information as possible.

o Do not be shy to ask strangers to answer your questions.

o Be objective when analyzing the results.

o Be natural when present

o Don't put off anything. Do your work as soon as possible

My plan for learning English

English Bridging Course is very important to me. With the help of the tutors and friends, I have my English greatly improved. Especially listening and speaking. However, that is still far from enough for me to remove the language barrier in my study as well as daily life. For example, my listening and speaking are still not satisfying. When I was listening, there are always new words that hinder my comprehension and further listening. When speaking, my sentences are not fluent because I have to think for the correct words. Also my pronunciation is not so good. So I need more work to improve my English when entering NTU.

I know that in NTU, there will be no English course dedicated for us PRC scholar. I will have less chance to learn English in class. But that does not mean I will not have chance to learn English. I think I still have at least three ways to learn.

First, I will try to make friends with classmates from other countries, such as India and Malay. In that way, I can communicate with them in English, so I can improve the skill of communicating as well as my pronunciation.

Second, I will try to watch more movies in my spare time. I know it is a good way to improve listening skills. And it also helps to learn some everyday use expressions as well.

Thirdly, I will spend quite a lot of time in reading
my text books. Because that is most important thing I should do in the following years. I will try to learn many terminologies that help me in my academic work.

Fourth, I can take advantage of newspapers. As we all know newspaper is more relevant to our daily life than text books. So I think it is a good way to pick up daily English.
